Clash Troubleshooting Guide

Having trouble with your FreeGuard Clash subscription? This guide covers the most common issues and how to resolve them.

Cannot Connect

If your client cannot establish a connection to any server:

  1. Check your subscription URL — Make sure the URL is correct and your subscription has not expired. You can verify your subscription status at /clash/manage.
  2. Refresh your subscription — In your client, update or re-download the subscription configuration. Servers and settings may have changed since your last update.
  3. Check proxy mode — Ensure your client has system proxy or TUN mode enabled. Without this, traffic will not route through the VPN.
  4. Try a different server node — The node you selected may be temporarily unavailable. Switch to another node in the proxy list.
  5. Try a different protocol — If one protocol is blocked in your network, switch to another. AnyTLS is the most resilient against blocking. See the Protocol Guide for details.

Slow Speed

If your connection works but speeds are poor:

  1. Switch to a closer server — Choose a node geographically closer to your location for lower latency and better throughput.
  2. Switch to Hysteria2 — This protocol is optimized for maximum speed. If you are on AnyTLS or Trojan, try a Hysteria2 node instead.
  3. Check TUN mode configuration — If TUN mode is not properly set up, some traffic may bypass the proxy or route inefficiently.
  4. Disable other VPN or proxy software — Running multiple proxies simultaneously causes conflicts and degrades performance. Disable any other VPN apps before using FreeGuard.

Subscription Update Failed

If your client fails to fetch or update the subscription:

  1. Check your internet connection — You need an active internet connection to update. In some regions, you may need an existing proxy connection to reach the subscription server.
  2. Verify the URL has not changed — Check /clash/manage to confirm your current subscription URL. If you renewed or changed plans, the URL may have been updated.
  3. Try manual import — Copy your subscription URL into a web browser, download the configuration file, then import it into your client manually.

Specific Website Not Accessible

If most sites work but a particular website does not load:

  1. Switch to Global mode — Your client may be in Rule mode, which only routes certain traffic through the proxy. Switch to Global mode to route all traffic through the VPN.
  2. Try a different server node or country — Some websites restrict access from certain IP ranges. Switching to a node in a different country may help.
  3. Check if the site blocks VPN IPs — Some services actively block known VPN IP addresses. This is outside FreeGuard’s control, but trying different nodes often resolves it.

Client Crashes or Will Not Start

If your Clash client crashes or fails to launch:

  1. Clear config and re-import — Delete the existing configuration in your client, then re-import your subscription URL from scratch.
  2. Update to the latest version — Outdated client versions may have bugs. Download the latest version of your client.
  3. Check system permissions — TUN mode requires administrator or root privileges. Make sure your client has the necessary permissions on your operating system.
