Setting Up FreeGuard VPN with sing-box for Android

sing-box is the official client for the sing-box universal proxy platform, offering robust multi-protocol support on Android. It handles Hysteria2, TUIC, Reality, VLESS, Trojan, and many more protocols. This guide walks you through installing sing-box on Android and connecting it to your FreeGuard VPN subscription.

Download & Install

sing-box for Android is available from multiple sources:

  1. Visit the Google Play Store or GitHub releases page.
  2. Download the latest version (Play Store) or the appropriate APK from GitHub.
  3. Install the app on your Android device.
  4. Launch sing-box after installation completes.

Import Your Subscription

Once sing-box is open, follow these steps to import your FreeGuard subscription:

  1. Navigate to the Profiles tab.
  2. Tap New Profile.
  3. Select Create manually.
  4. Set the type to Remote.
  5. Paste your FreeGuard subscription URL into the URL field.
  6. Give the profile a name, e.g. “FreeGuard VPN”.
  7. Tap Save to add the profile.
  8. Return to the Dashboard tab.
  9. Select the newly created profile and tap Enable to activate it.

Where is my subscription URL? Check your email for the credentials FreeGuard sent after purchase, or visit the Clash Pricing page to subscribe.

Enable Proxy

After importing your subscription and selecting the profile:

  1. On the Dashboard, tap the Start button to enable the VPN connection.
  2. Android will prompt you to grant VPN permission — tap Allow.
  3. The connection status will change to “Connected” when active.

sing-box uses TUN mode by default on Android, routing all device traffic through the VPN tunnel.

Select a Node

  1. Once connected, navigate to the Groups or Proxies section.
  2. Select a proxy group (e.g. “Auto”, “Select”, or a region-based group).
  3. Choose a specific server from the available nodes.
  4. Use the URL Test or latency check to measure server response times.
  5. Pick the server with the lowest latency for the best performance.

Tip: The “Auto” or “URL-Test” group automatically selects the fastest available server based on periodic latency checks.

Tips & Customization

  • Multi-Protocol Support: sing-box natively supports Hysteria2, TUIC, Reality, VLESS, Trojan, Shadowsocks, and more — no extra configuration needed.
  • Profile Switching: Maintain multiple profiles for different use cases and switch between them on the Dashboard.
  • Auto-Start: Enable auto-start in device settings to connect automatically on boot.
  • Battery Optimization: Exclude sing-box from battery optimization in your device settings to prevent connection drops.
  • Log Viewer: Check the Logs section for connection details when debugging issues.

Troubleshooting

Issue Solution
Subscription import fails Verify the URL is correct and your internet connection is active. Ensure you selected “Remote” as the type.
VPN permission denied Go to Android Settings > Apps > sing-box and grant VPN permission manually.
No internet after connecting Try switching to a different server node. Check that the profile configuration is correct.
Connection drops frequently Exclude sing-box from battery optimization. Check Settings > Battery > App battery management.
Latency test shows timeout Some nodes may be under maintenance. Select a different server or update the profile to fetch fresh nodes.
App crashes on start Ensure you have the latest version. Clear app data and re-import the subscription if needed.
