Setting Up FreeGuard VPN with Stash
Stash is a native Clash-compatible proxy client for iOS and macOS. It provides a polished, user-friendly interface for managing your VPN subscriptions.
This guide walks you through installing Stash, importing your FreeGuard subscription, and connecting to a VPN server.
Download Stash
- Open the App Store on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- Search for Stash - Rule Based Proxy.
- Tap Get to download and install.
Note: Stash may not be available in all App Store regions. If you cannot find it, you may need an Apple ID registered in a supported region (e.g., United States, Japan, Hong Kong).
Import Your Subscription
- Open Stash.
- Go to Settings (gear icon).
- Tap Subscribe.
- Tap the “+” button to add a new subscription.
- Paste your FreeGuard subscription URL into the URL field.
- Tap Save.
- Tap Download to fetch the configuration from the server.
Once the download completes, your proxy rules and server list will be ready to use.
Enable VPN
- Return to the Home screen of Stash.
- Toggle the VPN switch to ON.
- When prompted, tap Allow to grant VPN configuration permissions. You may need to authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode.
The VPN status indicator in your device’s status bar will confirm the connection is active.
Select a Node
- Go to the Proxy tab.
- Select a proxy group (e.g., Auto, Manual, or a region-based group).
- Choose a specific server node from the list.
Stash will display latency information for each node to help you pick the fastest option.
Set Up Auto-Update
Keeping your subscription up to date ensures you always have the latest server list.
- Go to Settings → Subscribe.
- Tap on your FreeGuard subscription entry.
- Set the update interval (recommended: every 24 hours).
Stash will automatically fetch updated configurations in the background.
Tips
- Custom Rules: Stash supports advanced rule editing. You can create custom rules to route specific apps or domains through different proxies or connect directly.
- Traffic Dashboard: Use the built-in dashboard to monitor real-time traffic, active connections, and bandwidth usage.
- MitM & Script: Stash supports MitM (Man-in-the-Middle) decryption and JavaScript scripting for advanced users who need request modification or automation.
Troubleshooting
VPN Permission Issues
- If the VPN toggle does not work, go to your device Settings → General → VPN & Device Management and remove any old VPN profiles, then try again in Stash.
- On macOS, ensure Stash has been granted the necessary system extension permissions under System Settings → Privacy & Security.
Subscription Download Failures
- Verify your subscription URL is correct and has not expired.
- If downloading fails on cellular data, try switching to Wi-Fi. Some carriers block certain traffic patterns.
- Check that your device clock is accurate, as time drift can cause TLS verification failures.
Nodes Not Loading
- Tap Download again in the Subscribe section to force a refresh.
- If the problem persists, delete the subscription and re-add it with a fresh URL.
